As the afternoon light dispelled the gloom shrouding Golgotha, or Skull Place, Mary grieved for her son. In her son’s illustrations, did Mary detect some echoes of Jesus’ childhood as he was growing up in Nazareth? Surely she expected Joseph to divorce her, or worse yet, he might even have her put to death by stoning (as the law permitted). These qualities made her unsuitable in the eyes of her people to be used mightily of God. He placed his mother in the care of his beloved apostle John. Although Mary's calling held great honor, it would demand great suffering too. Mary was exempt from this law, for preserving her virginal integrity inviolate she brought forth Jesus the Son of God without experiencing, as we have already said, any sense of pain. But when any child, however imperfect, becomes an adult, the transition may present challenges. And her joy was compounded, for Jesus later appeared to his half brother James, no doubt in private.
